The Itinera Institute launches an exhaustive study on the future of Belgium’s healthcare. The healthcare system in Belgium possesses important assets, but it is also seriously threatened by numerous new challenges in the XXIth century: the spending growth, the development of chronic diseases, the evolution of life- and consumption- styles, ageing, the progresses of new technologies and treatments.
The debate on the healthcare system is too often reduced to a caricatural vision of "the best healthcare system in the world". The Itinera Institute dared its diagnosis and identified its assets and weaknesses on the basis of the most recent national and international studies and under the supervision of reputed experts of the sector.
Even if the challenges are numerous, the diagnosis shows that it is not too late to act because our system possesses important assets. But if we do not react on time, we won’t be able to continue to assure the access to care, its quality, while mastering its costs. To guarantee the future of our healthcare system, we suggest a set of concrete and innovative actions for a sustainable system.
