A Healthy Healthcare System for the Future
The Itinera Institute is an independent and non-partisan think-tank and do-tank that identifies and promotes roads for policy reform towards sustained economic growth and social protection, for Belgium and its regions. Where political parties, professional organisations, universities and the media stop, Itinera Institute starts to defend fundamental reform towards improved economic growth and sustained social protection for all. The Itinera Institute concentrates its research and activities on nine fundamental subjects for Belgium and its regions in 21st century.
Among these, Itinera Institute places a particular importance on health care. We indeed think that the preservation of a dynamic system of health care, which conjugates quality, accessibility, efficiency and equity, represents a tremendous challenge for the 21st century. This challenge is not won beforehand, on the contrary: the Belgian health care is under pressure of a growing ditch between needs, on the one hand, and budgetary possibilities of the government, on the other. A healthy health care system requires thus to lead a thorough reflection where professionalism and experience go hand in hand.
This is the reason why Itinera decided to compose a team dedicated to health care. It is composed of seniors experimented on the subject, assisted by juniors fascinated by the theme. The team’s objective is to deliver concrete recommendations that may improve our system and allow it to adapt to a changeable medical and social context. Our approach is "facts based". Without a-priories or taboos, the analysis is drawn, at first, from the best international experiences that concern all of our health system’s actors: Citizens-patients, public authorities, payers, care providers and suppliers.
The Itinera Institute thus hopes to deliver a pragmatic and original contribution to the debate on one of the essential topics for the near future, and which, in Belgium, has been neglected for too long. The project "A Healthy Health Care System for the Future" spreads out over several years and is followed by a Committee of Accompaniment composed of various representative personalities of the world of Health. Trough their participation to this Committee, these persons - all recognized authorities in their field - indicate the importance of a deep reflection on the organization of health care in Belgium.
The members of the Committee of Accompaniment are not the authors of the research led by Itinera. They however support it by sharing their expertise and know how with the Itinera Institute. Within the framework of this project, The Itinera Institute will develop diverse studies and activities. The departure is given by an exhaustive analysis of the state of the Belgian health care system. Its objective is to identify the strengths and its weaknesses if the Belgian Healthcare system, as well as its opportunities and threats.
